Kaveman's Shower


Your guide to a sustainable, non toxic shower!

Americans grow more obsessed with washing each year and a lot of what we do in the shower is ass backwards. Today, I’ve compiled a list of my personal favorite shower tips combined with advice from the experts on how to enhance your shower experience!


1. Exfoliate the Right Way


DON’T: A lot of exfoliates remove the beneficial fats on our skin known as sebum. Many use micro beads which are tiny plastic beads that are gross for our skin and pollute our oceans. Exfoliating every day can cause breakouts and dry skin.


DO: Choose the natural exfoliator: African black soap! With ingredients like aloe, vitamin e, cocoa butter and coconut oil, this gem can be used on the face and body one to three times a week.


2. Contrast It Up!


DON'T: Don't torture yourself! A contrast shower is a shower that involves very cold water and very hot water and can help reduce DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and inflammation. Don't turn this into a Fear Factor game of how long you can brace the extreme temperatures.


DO: 3 minutes of a hot shower then 1 minute of cold water or 6 minutes hot 2 minutes cold. Do 3-4 cycles of this. The warm water gets your blood flowing while the cold will drive the blood inward to protect your internal organs.


3. Shave At Your Own Pace


DON’T: Shave every day. Over shaving could put you at risk for folliculitis and ingrown hairs. Research suggests that shaving your pubic hair can put you at risk for STDS.

DO: Shave following the direction of hair growth. Use a sharp blade to reduce the amount of time you’re repeatedly running the blade on your skin. Take a hot shower before shaving to open pores and soften hair.


4. Avoid the 7 Deadly Ingredients


DON'T: Buy products with these ingredients...

Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS/SLES)

Dioxane

Parabens

Propylene glycol

Diethanolamine or DEA

Fragrance

Triclosan


DO: Buy products with the USDA Organic label. Seek products made in the US with certified organic oils and extracts. Avoid products that test on animals and/or use animal products.


5. Conserve Water


DON’T: Taking long, hot showers is drying for your skin and wasteful. Don't flush the toilet if you don't have to.


DO: Pee in the shower. 27% of the water used in American homes comes from toilet flushing. Spend less time in the shower. While waiting for the shower to warm up, place a bucket in shower and use it later to water plants and rinse clothes.
